Truman Library to Pay Truman's 77-Year Delinquent Newspaper Bill to His Paperboy at Tallgrass Creek

“We’re Just Wild About HarryI’” -- a Wednesday, May 23, celebration of the Truman years by nearly 300 residents of Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park, KS. This festive event  will make history when The Truman Library and Museum officially pays off President Truman’s delinquent 77-year newspaper bill – which amounts today to  $56.63 (inclusive of interest) – to resident George Lund, who was Truman’s paperboy in Independence, Mo.  A Truman impersonator will pay off the bill in one-dollar increments. This will prove once and for all that “The Buck Stops Here.”

OVERLAND PARK,KS (February 23, 2012) – Tallgrass Creek retirement community residents in Overland Park, KS, are increasingly donating furniture or household items they no longer need to the community’s Treasure Chest, a resident-run resale shop. Proceeds from sale of the items benefit community and local charities such as Kids TLC. Beautiful dining room sets, extra kitchen gadgets, vintage jewelry, and other personal belongings are donated and sold.

Starting at 5:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving, you can purchase new annual memberships at either Matt Ross or Tomahawk Ridge community centers and receive a 20 percent discount. This offer is only good on Friday, Nov. 25. Both centers open at 5:30 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. The discount applies only to annual memberships and must be obtained in person. The membership must be paid in full at the time you sign up. A new member is someone who has never had a membership or who has not had one within the past 365 days.

KU Hawk Talk Football Kick-Off Rally Set for Sept. 1

(PRESS RELEASE) Kansas football head coach Turner Gill will launch his weekly radio show on Thursday, Sept. 1 as part of the Hawk Talk Kick Off Rally. Hawk Talk with Turner Gill will move to the Salty Iguana on the corner of 6th St., and Wakarusa in 2011 and the season-long show will begin with a bang as it will be a part of a kick off pep rally for Kansas football fans.

The Hawk Talk Kick Off Rally will open at 5 p.m., in the Salty Iguana parking lot with inflatable games for kids, various KU giveaways and multiple vendors on site. Hawk Talk with Turner Gill will broadcast live from inside Salty Iguana from 6-7 p.m.

KU Seeking Honorary Degree Nominations

For the first time, The University of Kansas is preparing to give out honorary degrees and is now accepting nominations for candidates.

The Kansas Board of Regents voted last year to let the six public universities grant honorary degrees, with restrictions.

Qualifications for the nominees include the following characteristics: intellectual, scholarly, professional achievement, creative achievement or service to humanity.

Alumni will be considered, but a connection to the university or the state of Kansas is not essential.

Nominations will be accepted until Aug.15 and reviewed by a committee appointed by Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. The degrees will be awarded next May at commencement ceremonies.

Olathe Salvation Army Wants $1 From Everyone June 25

Project ONE is a grassroots fundraiser to benefit the Olathe Salvation Army’s food pantry. During the summer, local food pantries tend to suffer from a food drought due to kids needing more food assistance while out of school.  Project ONE has the goal of collecting ONE dollar from everyone in Olathe on June 25, 2011 in hopes of eliminating the food drought in Olathe.
