Three Men Charged with Attempted Power Line Theft

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker has filed charges against three men who damaged and attempted to steal a power line in Independence .

Anthony L. Laycock, 32, of Louisburg , Kan., Derek L. Rudroff, 30, of Overland Park, Kan. , and Louis C. Hauenschild, 25, of Overland Park , Kan., face a misdemeanor Attempted Theft charge. In addition, Hauenschild has been charged with Property Damage 1st Degree, a Class D felony.

According to court documents, the men were connected with a power line cut near 40 Highway and Valley View Road on Monday, a cut that could have disrupted power to many Independence customers. Damage caused was estimated initially at $25,000 or more.

Prosecutors recommended a $5,000 cash-only bond.

Public Asked to Help Find Playground Arsonists

Police have not yet found the people responsible for setting fire to three school playgrounds in Johnson County, Kan.

Similar incidents of playground vandalism have occurred in Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe, and Shawnee.

The Shawnee Police Department is asking members of the community who drive by or live near any playground to be alert and report any suspicious people, vehicles or behavior.

The first reported incident was in June in Shawnee, Kan.  Since then, three other playgrounds were set on fire, two in Overland Park at Morse Elementary and Cedar Hills Elementary, and one in Olathe at Liberty View Elementary School.

Police Trying to ID Man in Wallet Theft Case

The Overland Park Police Department is asking the public to help identify a person of interest in a wallet theft. 

The victim said she was getting groceries in the area of 75th and Metcalf at about 4:30 p.m on Fri. July 8th. She told police her wallet was inside her purse which was sitting in her shopping cart.  She recalled turning away from her purse once; and when she turned back, she saw a man quickly walking away from her location.  She believes this is when her wallet was taken from her purse.   

Detectives were able to obtain still photos of a person of interest in this case. If you know the identity of the person in these photos, contact the TIPS HOTLINE at 816-474-TIPS with the information.

Man Spotted Watching Woman in Shower Wanted by Police

On July 11, Overland Park police responded to the Matt Ross Community Center to investigate an eavesdropping incident. A woman told police she was showering in the locker room when she noticed a man watching her. She yelled at the individual and he left. This incident occurred at about 6:50 A.M. Officers were able to obtain still photos of the suspect from the surveillance video at the community center.

Man Who Used Child As Shield Against Taser has Court Date

The next court date is set for an Olathe man accused of using his three-year-old as a human shield against deputies. Johnson County deputies accidentally Tasered the child.

Jason Troxel will be back in court March 9. He's charged with child endangerment and other related charges.
    
Prosecutors say deputies were trying to serve a protection order and remove the child from Troxel's custody, when he fled.  The child was treated for minor injuries.

District To Hold Meeting After School Burglarized, Set On Fire

Parents of students who attend Green Springs Elementary are invited to a meeting on Saturday to discuss the district's plans after the school was burglarized and set on fire this week.

The meeting is Saturday at 9 a.m. at Frontier Trail Middle School, 15300 W. 143rd Street.  The district will share information for Monday and those that cannot attend will be notified by phone or email, or they can find the information on the school's website.

Drivers Caught Texting to be Fined $60

After a six month warning period, Kansas police will begin ticketing drivers caught while texting and driving. The tickets will cost drivers $60, plus any local court fines. The law also bans instant messages and e-mails while driving.
    
Exceptions are made for reading emergency, traffic and weather-related alerts and to report a crime.
    
The Kansas Highway Patrol said troopers can easily tell between someone making a call and texting.
