DONATE A PINT OF BLOOD, RECEIVE A PINT OF BLUE BELL ICE CREAM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In the time it takes to eat a pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream you could save a life by donating blood on May 3 during the annual Blue Bell Ice Cream “Pint-for-Pint” blood drive at local Community Blood Center locations.

Blue Bell Ice Cream has partnered with Kansas City’s Community Blood Centers for the special
“Pint-for-Pint” blood drive from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 3 to help boost blood collections prior to the traditionally slow summer months. Historically, Memorial Day through Labor Day is a particularly tough time to recruit blood donors because of vacations and other summertime activities. Summer blood donations decrease about 20 percent while demand for blood increases.

Overland Park's Annual Large Item Trash Cleanup This Saturday

Overland Park's Annual Large Item Trash Cleanup This Saturday

Overland Park, KS - Overland Park's annual large item trash cleanup begins the first Saturday in April for residents living east of Antioch.

"This is probably one of the most popular city services we offer each year," said Jim Twigg, environmental programs coordinator. "The city receives lots of calls in anticipation of the three-weekend event."

Each year Overland Park alternates east and west of Antioch for residents to participate. In 2010, residents living west of Antioch were able to set out items.

More than 1.7 million pounds of material were collected in 2010; 2.5 million pounds in 2009.

Three weekends have been designated. Where a resident lives will determine which weekend is applicable. All items for disposal must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. the day of the scheduled pick up. No special arrangements will be made once the crews have completed a neighborhood.trash at the curb for large item trash pick up.

Public Meeting to be Held for Shawnee Mission Deer Culling Plan

The plan drew a lot of protests last year and now government leaders must again  decide if deer hunting will be allowed in Shawnee Mission Park this year.

Last year's hunt was to thin out the deer population in the park and it drew numerous protests.

This year there are again too many deer for the park to support.  Those behind the plan claim the animals will die because there isn't enough land for them to graze on.

A public meeting Wednesday night will explain how this year's hunt will work.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the administration building in Shawnee Mission Park.
