Truman Library to Pay Truman's 77-Year Delinquent Newspaper Bill to His Paperboy at Tallgrass Creek

WHAT:

“We’re Just Wild About HarryI’” -- a Wednesday, May 23, celebration of the Truman years by nearly 300 residents of Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park, KS. This festive event  will make history when The Truman Library and Museum officially pays off President Truman’s delinquent 77-year newspaper bill – which amounts today to  $56.63 (inclusive of interest) – to resident George Lund, who was Truman’s paperboy in Independence, Mo.  A Truman impersonator will pay off the bill in one-dollar increments. This will prove once and for all that “The Buck Stops Here.”

Nearly 300 Overland Park Retirees to Celebrate Fitness at May 11 Outdoor Games at Tallgrass Creek

WHAT:

An Outdoor Games celebration of individual fitness by nearly 300 residents of Tallgrass Creek retirement community in Overland Park, Kansas. Residents will play Bocce, golf, ladder ball, washers, Frisbee toss, and bean bag toss. The games will kick-off with a Pep Rally-style vocal performance by the Tallgrass Creek Chorale. The games are being organized by a resident-run Wellness Committee that formed a Walking Club that walks the Tallgrass Creek campus’ 65 acres Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Event Highlights the Work of Mark Twain

The Johnson County Library will host a special program entitled “Mark Twain and the Civil War” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Central Resource Library (9875 West 87th St., Overland Park).

Mark Twain expert Martin Zehr will speak on the author’s ongoing relevance in American literature and take questions about the man and his works. Zehr is a member of the Mark Twain Circle of America and has written many Twain-related articles for academic journals and made presentations at the local, national and international level.

The program is part of Library’s 2011-2012 Legacies of the Civil War series. Library programs are free and open to the public registration is required. Arboretum to Hold Christmas Lighting Events

 

 

It's a candle-lit walk like none other. Walk the adorned pathways of the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens and enjoy the festive lighting during the annual Holiday Luminary Walk.

The event is Nov. 25 and 26 and Dec. 2 and 3. It starts at 5 p.m. and concludes at 8 p.m. each scheduled day. Cost is $7 per person; children 5 and under get in free. Parking is free. You will hear festive music and see beautifully lit displays.

Exhibit Celebrates Turn-of-the-Century Christmas

 

Discover what Christmas meant to school children in rural Kansas at the turn of the 20th Century. The Lansfield School, a restored one-room schoolhouse, will be decorated for a 1904 Christmas starting Nov. 26. Join in on the festivities and make your very own Christmas ornament. The exhibit  runs through Dec. 31 from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. The Lanesfield School Historic Site is located at 18745 S. Dillie Road in Edgerton, Kan.
