International Adoption Meeting Open to Public June 12

Dillon International, a licensed, non-profit agency, will host a free meeting from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Corinth Library, 8100 Mission Rd., in Prairie Village. A representative will give an overview of adoption from China, Korea, Haiti, India and Hong Kong, plus new opportunities in Ghana. Buy Your Spring Buds And Help Christmas Bloom For The Needy!

 Merriam, Kan. (March 28, 2011) _ A “Charity Friday” shopping event April 22 at Suburban Lawn & Garden, 105th and Roe, Overland Park, will benefit Johnson County Christmas Bureau.

From 5-8 p.m., select your spring plantings and other landscaping items while enjoying live music, light hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Suburban will donate 10 percent of all purchases during that period to the Christmas Bureau, which provides food, clothing and gifts for more than 12,000 low-income county residents at its annual Holiday Shop. The Bureau is a non-denominational, 501©(3) United Way agency that has been providing holiday assistance since 1960.

Clients, who live in every ZIP code in the county, are referred by other social service agencies and must meet specific income guidelines. This year’s shop will be open to clients by appointment from Dec. 2-10 at a yet-to-be determined location.

All You Can Eat Shrimp Dinner Fundraiser

Hillcrest Chrisitan Early Learning Center is holding an All You Can Eat Shrimp Dinner on Friday, April 8, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. All proceeds go toward center improvements for the children in our care.

Prices are $15 for adults, $8 for a one-time only youth plate, $3 for child's sack lunch for children six and under.  

Dinner includes: boiled shrimp, chicken, potatoes, corn, salad, rolls, dessert and a drink.

Special Event Promotes the Inner Beauty and Confidence in Young Girls

Miss Brooklynn Productions held the 2011 All-Natural Miss Sweetheart Inner Beauty Pageant on February 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel.  It was a sold out event and the day was filled with music, new friendships, and family fun. Each of the (50) contestants were personally crowned with a rhinestone sterling silver tiara by Snow White, plus each received an exclusive swag bag filled goodies including Princess Silly Bandz, a keepsake necklace, a fairy wand, and cupcake from SmallCakes!   Sponsors including Angel Babies, Mommy Shop and Happy-Names set up vendor booths displaying a variety of goodies for purchase.

Celebrate Kwanzaa December 27

Kwanzaa is underway. The Johnson County NAACP will host a celebration at the Antioch Library on Monday, December 27. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with "Crafts for Children," a two-hour window in which kids can get together and make Kwanzaa- and holiday-themed projects.

The big Kwanzaa celebration runs from 5 to ­ 7 p.m. and features guest speaker Amani Myles, president of the Kansas State NAACP Youth Council Conference. A reception follows. Both events are fee and open to the public.

Christmas Holiday Camp Available

Christmas Holiday Camp Available

Holiday Camp is available during Christmas break through the city of Leawood. The recreational program is for children ages five to 11-years-old. Kids will take part in games and other activities as well as possible field trips.

Jewish Arts Festival October 10

The 8th Jewish Arts Festival will take place in Overland Park on October 10. The event will have activities for the whole family including a kosher food court, hands-on children's pavilion, vendors and more.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be held on the Jewish Community Campus at 5801 W. 115th Street, Overland Park, Kan. Advance tickets: $5 adults, $2 children 4-12 (under 4 free).  Tickets at the gate: $8 adults, $5 children 4-12 (under 4 free).
