Family Shares Story of Frozen Egg Baby

LEAWOOD, Kan. — She is the first baby born in the metro area and the entire state of Kansas using a frozen egg.  Her name is Morgan Bell and on Wednesday, the infertility doctor who helped make her life possible got to meet her.

It was November of last year when Jessica and Ryan Dickson saw their sweet baby for the first time.  Fast forward to today and that ultrasound picture returned to the doctor’s office, life and in person.

Dr. Sam Kim, who performed the frozen egg implantation, met baby Morgan saying, “Oh my gosh!  I am so excited!  There’s so much joy. This is the joy of my job anyway.  Yes!  Oh wow!  I see a beautiful human being.”

Dr. Kim says freezing a woman’s eggs is very difficult because they are large cells. But, Dr. Kim says baby Morgan is living proof it can work.

Kan. Republicans Continue Redistricting Debate

TOPEKA, Kan. — You might think in such a heavily republican state, Kansas would have no problem with redistricting. But right now, Kansas is one of the last states in the country still debating the maps.

And it turns out the biggest fight is between Republicans.

The fight has been going on so long now that the Kansas Secretary of State has had to push back election filing dates and the whole thing could derail the state’s August 7 primary elections if it’s not resolved soon.

Lawmakers have to redraw political maps after the census to adjust for population changes. Traditionally, the Kansas Senate and House redraws their own maps and each body approves the others without a squabble. But this year the Kansas House, controlled by conservative Republicans, rejected the Kansas Senate’s map. The State Senate is controlled by moderate Republicans.

Cash-Strapped “The Jo” Faces Route Cuts

OLATHE, Kan. — Steep budget cuts could mean some big changes for Johnson County’s bus system, as at least 10 of the system’s two dozen routes could face elimination.

According to a report in the Kansas City Star, after years of expansion, a major budget shortfall could lead to drastic service reductions for The Jo.

The Jo’s fiscal year 2013 $12 million budget is down $1.5 million from fiscal year 2012, and includes cuts in federal, state and county support.

Under new plans, only five of The Jo’s nearly two dozen routes would survive, while another five – including a popular route to Lawrence – would survive “if possible.” Another 10 routes are slated for elimination entirely.

The Jo’s two services for elderly and disabled riders – Special Edition and SWIFT – would remain intact, the Star reports.

Kline Files Motion to Remove Two Supereme Court Justices from His Appeal

TOPEKA, Kan. — As FOX 4  News first reported Monday, former Attorney General and Johnson county D.A. Phill Kline filed a motion  Tuesday to have two Kansas Supreme Court justices removed from his appeal to keep his law license. A court spokesman confirmed the filings Tuesday afternoon. They include an appeal brief and the motion for the recusal of justices Carol Beier and Lawton Nuss, the court’s chief justice.

Click here to see Kline’s recusal motion.

Kline’s attorney Tom Condit of Cincinnati said his filing demands justice Carol Beier be removed from hearing Kline’s ethics appeal-citing among other things-a 2008 opinion she authored. Condit says the opinion relied on falsehoods about Kline’s handling of abortion records-and was critical of Kline based on those falsehoods.

Procedure Helps Metro Mom Survive Heart Attack

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Mother’s Day carried extra importance for a metro mother of three. She had a heart attack in November, 2011. It was so severe, her heart stopped beating for 25 minutes.

Cyndi Niezer survived because of a procedure known as “CODE  ICE.”  Niezer spent her 41st birthday in a coma. A blood clot caused a heart attack that would’ve killed anyone a few years ago. Her husband feared the worst.

“Doctors tried multiple drugs and multiple procedures to get her heart started,” said Brad Niezer. “They said  it was developed I believed from kids falling through the ice you know underwater for 45 minutes well you pull them out and they’re 100 percent fine maybe there’s something to this.”

Dr. Ujjaval Patel says conventional methods got Niezer’s heart beating again but the only reason her heart and more importantly her brain have no long-term damage is because of CODE ICE.
