Expectant Great Horned Owl Takes Up Residence at New Tallgrass Creek Retirement Community

Expectant Great Horned Owl Takes Up Residence at New Tallgrass Creek Retirement Community

A new resident has moved into Tallgrass Creek, a continuing care retirement community in Overland Park, and this one – much like the late actress Greta Garbo – wants to be left alone. At least until she gives birth to her babies.

The new resident is a Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) who this month inhabited the nest of a red tail hawk and who plans to stay there until her eggs hatch in early March. The owl is about 25 inches long with a 60-inch wingspan. She is estimated to weigh as much as 60 pounds. Incredibly, she has not moved from the nest -- not even in the midst of the recent snow blizzard.

Public Meeting to be Held for Shawnee Mission Deer Culling Plan

The plan drew a lot of protests last year and now government leaders must again  decide if deer hunting will be allowed in Shawnee Mission Park this year.

Last year's hunt was to thin out the deer population in the park and it drew numerous protests.

This year there are again too many deer for the park to support.  Those behind the plan claim the animals will die because there isn't enough land for them to graze on.

A public meeting Wednesday night will explain how this year's hunt will work.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the administration building in Shawnee Mission Park.
